Chapter One, Retaliation
In the Japan, on the year 2002 a legend becomes true. It all starts in the small town of Faren. It starts during study hall, in the cafeteria. Two students, a boy and girl sit at one table; a boy sits alone at another table nearby. A group of seven boys sit at the table near that one. One of the seven points and laughs at the boy as he leans over to help the girl.
“Hey loser! You think studying with her can get you closer to royalty? HAHAHA…She is nothing, just a lonely brat who likes climbing, like a monkey!” The leader of the band of boys says with cruelty in his words. The group of boys sitting at the table burst into laughter.
“Just leave us alone Shen.” Says the boy assisting the girl.
“What are you going to do about it bookworm?” Shen said, a grin on his face.
“Just ignore them Kain.” The girl said with a frown.
“Aw is Miss Princess going to do something about it? Going to have your daddy exile me? Oh wait boys, I forgot, he’s dying from cancer!” Shen said laughing a lot.
The boy who sat alone was listening and he turned to look at the girl; tears were starting to stream down her face. Kain put his arm around her. Xando turned to give a disgusted look at the group of guys.
“What’s up Xando, feel like jumping in on this? You gonna show me some Taekwondo moves?” The group laugh some more. Xando grumbles a bit.
The three continued to work while the seven boys start watching for the teacher. They start balling up paper and throwing it at the girl.
“Tora switch spots with me…” Kain says quietly. They switch seats and the boys laugh and continue throwing paper ball sat Kain. Shen pulls a rock out of his backpack and wraps it up in a paper wad and throws it hard at Kain. Kain gets hit in the side of his ribs and yells. The rock hits the ground and the paper moves apart revealing it.
“Ahhh.” Kain says in pain, clutching his side.
Xando gets up, grabs the rock and throws it into Shen’s stomach. Right then the teacher shows up.
“Ahhhh, oh god it hurts!” Shen says aloud.
“Shen, go to the nurses office dear.” The teacher says calmly. Shen suddenly snatches up his stuff and grins big at Xando and takes off for the nurses office, pretending to hold his stomach. The teacher turns an evil eye to Xando.
Xando! Go to the office right now!” The teacher yells. Xando sighs and gathers up his belongings and the teacher smacks him in the head with her rolled up paper. Xando ignores this and heads for the office. The office of course does nothing…leaving him to sit there and do nothing the rest of the day. Once the bell rings for the end of school his teacher shows up and gives him a paper saying he has received six demerits. He leaves the room and drops it in a trash can on the way out of the building. He leans against a tree waiting for his bus to show up. He notices Kain and Tora. Kain has pulled his shirt up and is showing the bruise it left. Tora notices Xando eyeing them and says sometime to Kain, they both turn and approach him.
“Hey, Xando…thanks…” Kain says, a little quietly.
“And we are sorry you got in trouble.” Tora says nicely.
“I…I just gave him what he deserved…” Xando says, feeling his face heat up. Why is he embarrassed…maybe…because he doesn’t like fighting...
“Let’s be friends, ok?” Tora says smiling pleasantly.
“Uhm, alright… You can just call me X…” Xando says timidly. He turns as his bus arrives.
“I gotta go, see you tomorrow.” Xando says and boards his bus.
“Are you sure you want to be friends with him? His whole family is trained to fight people.” Kain says.
“I don’t think he’s bad...” Tora says calmly.
“Well I’ll see you tomorrow then.” Kain says as he boards his bus.
“Bye!” Tora yells at him as she runs for hers.
Chapter Two, Family Conflict, Part One
Kain opens the door and his Grandfather smiles as he walks in.
“Hey Kain, doing good at school?” His Grandfather asks.
“Yeah...I got a rock thrown at me though....it was that Shen kid I told you about.” Kain says sheepishly.
“Let me see...” His Grandfather says with a stern look in his eye. Kain approaches his Grandfathers chair and pulls up his shirt revealing the large bruise. His Grandfather examines it closely.
“Well, there’s nothing that we can do about it, but I'm sure it hurts.” Kain Grandfather says with a sigh
“Why doesn't that boy ever get in trouble?” He says loudly.
“I don't know dad...somebody else is always getting in trouble. Xando threw the rock back at him today before the teacher got there...” Kain says.
“Wait a minute, THE Xando Kuro? The boy from the Kuro family?” His Grandfather says quickly.
“Yeah...” Kain says, eying his Grandfather.
“And then he got in trouble for it?” His Grandfather asks.
“Yes...I....kinda made friends with him after school.” Kain says, curious of his Grandfathers knowledge.
“Well that’s a good thing. I suppose you owe him for what he did today hmm...” His Grandfather says in a curious voice.
“Well...I...I suppose.” Kain says quietly.
“Then if he ever needs assistance you ought to help him out.” His Grandfather says, once again with a strange tone of voice.
“Y-yes Grandfather…” Kain says as he heads to his room. His mother comes out of the bathroom on the way to his room.
“Ah there you are, what have you been up to today hmm?” His mother asks.
“I just helped Tora with her homework.” Kain says firmly.
“You should go out with her dear, her family is rich.” His mother says with a flare in her voice
“Mom we are just friends…” Kain mumbles.
“Oh I’ll bet you like her. It’s ok hunny, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” His mother says with a small giggle. She then leaves the hall to the kitchen.
Kain sighs and goes into his room, shutting the door behind him. He sits at his desk and pulls a book out from the drawer and starts studying the runes that his grandfather showed him.
Chapter Three Family Conflict, Part Two
When Tora gets home she dashes off to her room, drops her school bag and picks up her backpack and starts packing all her climbing tools. Now that she had caught up on the homework she missed when her family went off on that boring vacation to visit her father’s friend and their family. Thank god she could rely on Kain to help her. She finishes packing her bag and heads for the front door. Her mother steps out of the kitchen.
“Tora, where are you going?” She asks sweetly.
“I'm going to go ask for permission to climb Faren Mountain.” Tora says quickly, swinging the backpack on.
“You can’t go climbing mountains by yourself, and you know what your father might say.” Tora's mother says in a hushed voice.
“What I might say about what?” Tora's father asks as he enters the room. Tora's mom sighs.
“She's going to ask if she can climb the mountain.”
“No you’re not young lady, you are of royal blood, and you have no business running around like you do. We are a respectable family and one day you will be a respectable woman. You stay here!” Her father says angrily, stomping his foot as he says here.
“I'm leaving father...goodbye.” Tora grabs the door, yanks it open and takes off as he father dashes for her. He stops in the doorway.
“What are we going to do with that girl...?” He says exasperated.
“I don’t know dear...I just don’t know anymore.” Tora's mother says. She goes back to the kitchen to work on dinner.
Chapter Four, Family Conflict Part Three
Xando walks into his family’s home/dojo and his father is just beside the door, aiming a karate chop at Xando’s head. Xando ducks and swings his right foot at his father’s legs. His father jumps away and grins, then chuckles to himself.
“Still on the ball eh son. I’m proud of you. Are you ready for more lessons today?” Xando’s father says with a big grin.
“Not today dad…I’m…not feeling well.” Xando says, trying to sound sickly. His father’s grin turns to a frown quickly.
“Well then you better get some rest…But don’t forget we are practicing on Saturday to show the students.” His father says sternly.
“Ok sir…” Xando says and with a quiet sigh of relief he heads to his room. He lays down on his bed and stretch’s out. He pulls out a wonderswan game system and plays it for about an hour. His mother walks in to ask if he needs anything but once she sees him playing the game she puts her hands on her hips.
“Xando you’re not sick are you?” She says angrily.
“…No.” Xando said, not looking away from his game.
“You need to get out here and do your lessons today.” His mother says in a raised voice.
“I don’t want to fight…” Xando says, finally shutting his game off and looking at his mother.
“It’s our tradition Xando, all of our family have become well acknowledged fighters. You should at least accept it, as a gift from your family.” She says urgently.
“I DON’T WANT TO FIGHT PEOPLE!” Xando yells loudly. Heart pounding, he opens his window, and jumps outside and takes off towards town. At the entrance to his property, at the gate his father sees him coming.
“OI! Xando, come here.” He yells at him. Xando sighs, knowing he must do something now that he was seen. He goes to his father to see what is wanted.
“You said you are not feeling very well, but at least you’re still exercising, that’s good. I would like you to escort Miss Meije to the mountain. I have given her permission to climb it.” His father says once he is in earshot. Tora peeks around the doorway and sees him.
“Oh, Hi Xando.” She says with that brilliant smile on her face.
“Uh, Hi…well I…guess we’ll go ahead then, bye dad…” Xando says making sure to look him in the eye. He nods to Tora and starts walking off behind the house. As they pass his room window, he notices it’s been shut.
Chapter Five, The Rustle in the Bushes
Xando leads Tora around the back of the house and grabs a lantern. Tora looks questioningly at him.
“Will it take long to get there?” Tora asks nervously.
“No, you won’t even get there until tomorrow. Good thing you came on a weekend.” Xando says.
“Oh…wow.” Tora says looking around the forest path Xando starts down. She quickly catches up and follows him.
They continue walking quietly until a bush starts rustling. Tora jumps and hides behind Xando.
“There’s nothing out here is there?” She asks fearfully.
“No, there shouldn’t be.” Xando says. Just then a figure jumps out and Tora drops to the ground. The figure stops just short of the two of them and starts laughing.
“Ahahaha, oh Tora you made that so easy.” Kain says, still laughing.
“How did you get here?” Xando asks him.
“Tora’s mom said she was going to the mountain and when I got here your dad said if I go quickly I would be able to find you.” Kain says. Tora slowly gets up to her feet.
“That was mean Kain.” She says in a grumpy voice.
“I’m sorry Tora.” Kain says sincerely.
“Well we better get going so we can rest tonight.” Xando says.
“Alright, let’s go! …Wait…Where are we going again?” Kain asks. This time Tora laughs.
“We are going to the mountain Kain. You want to climb with me?” She asks with a grin.
“Uh…maybe.” Kain says while looking up towards the mountain, which towers above the trees.
“I’ll go too.” Xando says, feeling interested in a new challenge.
“Well then what are we waiting for!?” Tora says and takes off ahead. Xando and Kain run to follow her. After quite a while they stop at a small building. Xando pulls out a rod from the ground by a nearby tree and slides it into a slot in the wall and the door opens.
“We can rest here tonight.” Xando says grinning at the amazed look on Kain and Tora’s faces. Xando gets out blankets and they crash for the night.
Chapter Six, The Beast
Xando wakes up Tora and Kain in the morning early. After the yawns and stretches and quick ramen breakfast served by Xando, they head outside and start down the half mile stretch to the mountain.
“Thanks a lot Xando, this place is really great.” Tora says with a excited grin as they reach the base of the mountain.
“Are you guys ready for a climb?” Tora asks them as she drops down her bag and pulls out all her climbing gear. Before they can ever respond she’s already got her gear on and is scaling the side of the mountain. Kain and Xando watch her rise quickly, putting in clamps every 50 feet up the way. Then without warning she drops and stops perfectly above the ground in front of them.
“Ok, were set. You guys alright?” She asks them. Kain shifts nervously.
“Maybe I will just stay here.” Kain says quietly. Tora laughs at him.
“You coming Xando?” She asks him.
“Yeah, let’s do this.” He says, ready to climb. Tora gets him in the right gear and explains the way to climb. Then she starts back up the mountain and Xando follows slowly behind her. After they get up by 400 feet there’s a level base and Tora starts to climb up onto it. Just then a mountain lion jumps down towards her and she quickly jumps back.
“Xando! There’s a mountain lion!” She yells quickly, dropping down the cord rapidly until she reaches him. The lion slowly makes its way down the cliff. Kain runs for the building when he sees the lion. Xando and Tora have trouble going down and gradually drop about 10 feet every minute. The lion gets to a ledge really close by them and claws at them. Xando pushes his feet to get them away from it. They continue going down.
“Xando we have to go faster!” She says urgently. Xando starts dropping faster but the lion gets down below them and starts scratching at the rope holding them. The lion then bites it and Xando and Tora fall a bit but she quickly manages to secure them again. Kain comes running back with the rod used to open the building and hurls it at the lion, hitting it in the side. The lion growls and runs down the mountain side. Xando suddenly drops the remaining distance with Tora waiting where he left her. He quickly gets his gear off just as the lion comes down. He looks at it intently and it chooses to focus on him. It lunges at him and he just barely manages to turn out of its way and kick it in the head. Tora swings her way around the side of the mountain and grabs the rod and throws it down nearby Xando. The lion starts snarling viciously and rushes at him. He runs behind the rod, pulls it out and swings it at the lion. It backs off and growls a bit then it runs away. Tora comes back down and Kain comes out from the forest.
“Are we safe?” Kain asks.
“I...I think it's gone.” Xando says, breathing heavily.
“That was amazing Xando. I never saw anything like it.” Tora says excitedly again.
“I...just...didn't want anyone to get hurt.” Xando says. Tora quickly gathers up her supplies and packs them away and they head back for Xando's home. The three of them tell Xando's father all about the incident. Afterwards Kain and Tora make plans to visit Xando again. They head home together. Xando and his father stand at the gate to watch them leave.
“I'm mighty proud of you son. Your mother told me about yesterday...I suppose maybe I have been a little too rough on you so...I'll train you only if you want it...” Xando's father says in a proud voice.
“Thanks dad...” Xando said smiling for the first time at his father since he started training.
