Chapter One: The Beginning Of It All.
He sat there, alone in the darkness, for who knows how long. It had surrounded him so completely that he was not sure if he was still alive or lost in a void of darkness after death. He called out the names of all of his friends, his family members, and the girl he loved so dearly. For hours it seemed, as he slowly started to cry. Tears rolled down his face as he cried out for anyone to respond, but no answers came. Just a long echo of every sound he made.
Finally, finding the will to do something, he stood up. He wandered for what felt like days, stumbling in the darkness. A few times he bumped into a hard rocky surface, which gave him hope. Perhaps he was in some kind of a cave, and was so deep that there was no light. After getting hurt many times, walking into walls and stalagmites and stalactites, he stopped. He felt so hungry, it was hard to continue. He fainted there on the ground.
Some time had passed when he woke up; a small shimmering light came from ahead. It looked like it was light-years away, but he got back up and walked towards the light. Several reflections of light were bouncing off a rock wall as he got closer, and he turned through so many different passages until finally he made his way out of the cave. He took a long look at the land around him, and collapsed onto his knees.
There was fire and destruction all around the city he had grown up in. Much of the land around him was black and charred. He stumbled his way down the hill and towards the road that enters the city on the west side. Cars were overturned, crashed, burning, off in the dirt, just everywhere. The most haunting part was the bodies… so many dead people. Blood splattered bodies lay everywhere; it appeared that many people had been on foot for some reason.
Once he finally approached the city he started calling out names again. First he traveled the 5 blocks from the west road entrance to the city, to his girlfriends’ house. Many buildings along the way were broken; glass had fallen upon the ground as if each window had completely shattered. Several homes were on fire as well, the smell in the air was so horrid. He banged on the door several times but got no answer. He heard nothing from inside.
He broke in the window next to the front door and started to search the home. In the living room, on the couch, the floor, the table, the walls, the ceiling, and all over the room, were pieces of clothing and flesh, from the little sister, mother, and father of his girlfriend… He almost immediately threw up on the floor, leaning against a wall. Tears began to run down his face once more as he checked the other rooms and finally went up the stairs. He called her name, he wanted her to answer, he wanted it so bad.
He was terrified to open her door, terrified that she was dead, that he would never be with her again. His steps as he got closer to the door became weaker and he allowed himself to slide down the side of the wall. He just couldn’t open that door. After a few minutes of his tears, he quieted down. He heard a loud wind from the room. He gulped and opened it, still sitting on the floor. The window was broken out but she wasn’t there.
He got up and looked out the window, but he didn’t see anything. He stopped to look at her pictures taped on the mirror of her dresser. Pictures of him and her hugging and goofing around were all over the mirror. At the bottom he saw a picture she drew a few days ago, if it was a few days ago. It said at the bottom: “Kelsey and Remy forever” Remy smiled ever so weakly. That was their names, and for some reason, seeing the names, comforted him.
Remy ran out of the house and a massive wave of wind rushed through the town. The leaves of the trees that had not been burned away fluttered through the air. But after the wind had passed, it didn’t persist. Normally it would have been a constant beating of air against him and everything else. Puzzled, he looked back the way the wind had come, from the west. Several miles away a plane went down and exploded, the ground shook from the impact and he fell over. He gasped as he turned around and scrambled to his feet, headed towards his house.
